The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) reminds hunters of regulation changes earlier this year that restrict the importation of out-of-state harvested deer and elk. The change in the regulation helps protect California deer and elk herds from Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

DFG has received numerous requests for clarification from hunters. To answer the queries, the Department has developed a comprehensive question-and-answer paper to address the most frequently asked questions.

The suspected infective agent (prion) that scientists believe causes CWD is concentrated in the brain, spinal cord and lymph glands of deer and elk affected with CWD. Hunters can do their part to protect the state’s herds by making sure that the skull and backbone of any out-of-state harvested deer or elk remains outside the state and buried away from deer and elk habitat.
