FITCHBURG, Wis. – Deer registration and sample collection stations are now set in the Department of Natural Resources’ South Central Region for the gun deer seasons beginning Oct. 30 in the chronic wasting disease (CWD) Intensive Harvest (IHZ) and Herd Reduction Zones (HRZ).

The gun deer season in the IHZ runs from Oct. 30 through Jan. 3, while the early gun season runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 in the HRZ.

Hunters in the Intensive Harvest and Herd Reduction Zones must first shoot an antlerless deer before they can harvest a buck during both the archery and gun seasons. After shooting and tagging an antlerless deer, a hunter can stay afield and harvest a buck or they can register their antlerless deer and receive a free buck tag.

The IHZ, marked by major highways and surrounding the 964 square mile CWD Disease Eradication Zone (DEZ), encompasses much of Iowa County, western Dane County, southern Sauk County, and small sections of Columbia, Green and Richland Counties. The HRZ covers all or part of 15 deer management units and 14 counties around the IHZ.

All deer killed in the IHZ must be registered in the Intensive Harvest Zone. Any deer shot in the HRZ must be registered in the unit of kill or an adjacent unit within the HRZ or the IHZ. Also, any deer harvested in either the IHZ or HRZ must be registered no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day after it was killed.

Landowners in the DEZ are eligible to receive free permits to hunt deer by gun and bow on their property through Jan. 3. This year, each DEZ landowner who gets a free permit also receives two free buck tags. These buck tags allow the property owner or their guests to shoot two bucks under the authority of the landowner permit without first having to harvest an antlerless deer.

These permits also enable landowners or their guests to kill deer without a license so long as they hunt on land owned by the permit holder. Landowners may call (608) 935-1945 if they desire to receive a free permit for use on their property.

The permit holder or their guests won’t need a deer hunting license to participate in the long deer hunting seasons, but do need to meet the legal age and hunter safety requirements for obtaining a deer hunting license in Wisconsin.

The DNR will again be sampling deer this year in the HRZ as part of its CWD disease surveillance program. Sampling will take place on Nov. 1-2. Only adult deer will be sampled in the HRZ.

Agency staff will sample any deer harvested and kept by hunters in the IHZ and DEZ. The DNR will only test fawns shot in the IHZ and DEZ if requested by a hunter who is keeping the carcass. There are four DNR operated IHZ/DEZ deer registration and collection sites that opened Sept. 13 and will run through Jan. 3.

They are Norslein’s Wood Works, Black Earth; Heck’s Farm Market, Arena; Eagle Mart Stop-N-Go, Barneveld; and the Lone Rock Unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. Their hours of operation are:

  • Sept. 13-Oct. 13 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
  • Oct. 14-Oct. 29 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
  • Oct. 30-Nov. 9 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
  • Nov. 10-Jan.3 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

Below are the gun deer registration and collection stations in the CWD Intensive Harvest and Herd Reduction Zones, by county. CWD sample collection stations are listed in bold print. Some of the collection stations will only be open Nov. 1-2. Some registration stations will be collecting heads November 22-23. Collection station locations are subject to change. Hunters are strongly advised to call ahead before bringing their deer in for registration to verify hours of operation.
