FITCHBURG – Registration and sample stations are now set in the Department of Natural Resources’ South Central Region for the gun deer seasons beginning Oct. 28 in the chronic wasting disease (CWD) Eradication (DEZ) and Herd Reduction Zones (HRZ)
The gun deer season in the DEZ runs from Oct. 28 through Jan. 3, while the early gun season runs from Oct. 28-31 in the HRZ.
Hunters in the Eradication and Herd Reduction Zones must first shoot an antlerless deer before they can harvest a buck during both the archery and gun seasons. After shooting and tagging an antlerless deer, a hunter can stay afield and harvest a buck.
The western DEZ has been enlarged to 1,352 square miles and encompasses much of Iowa County, western Dane County, southern Sauk County and small sections of Columbia, Green and Richland Counties.
The southeast DEZ has also been expanded to 321 square miles and includes roughly the southeast quarter of Rock County and the southwest portion of Walworth County.
The HRZ covers all or part of 22 deer management units and 18 counties around the two DEZs.
All deer shot in the DEZs must be registered no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day after it was killed. Any deer harvested in the HRZ must be registered in the unit of kill or adjacent HRZ unit or DEZ station no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day after it was shot.
Again this year, landowners in the DEZ are eligible to receive permits to hunt deer either by gun or bow on their property through March 31, 2005. These permits are available at any license sale outlet or DNR service center for a $2.00 processing fee.
The permits allow landowners within the DEZ to hunt deer on their own property without buying a license. Each DEZ landowner who gets a permit also receives one buck tag. The tag allows the property owner hunting under the authority of a landowner permit to shoot a buck without first harvesting an antlerless deer.
DEZ landowners may also allow other hunters on their property without having to buy a license under the authority of their landowner permits, provided they meet Wisconsin hunting license age and safety requirements. Hunters wishing to do so must first obtain a DEZ hunter backtag and landowner authorization form from any license sales location for a $2.00 processing fee.
Also, parts of Dodge, Grant and Jefferson Counties will be included in the early Zone T antlerless hunt that runs from Oct. 28 -–31. Deer harvested during the four-day Zone T season must be registered in the unit of kill or an adjacent unit.
Hunters are advised to check the 2004 Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations for more information on the various archery, gun and Zone T seasons.
DNR will be operating six deer collection/registration stations in the western DEZ through Jan. 3, 2005. These stations will register and collect deer heads for CWD testing from deer harvested in the DEZ and HRZ and accept deer harvested in the DEZ for donation to the food pantry program.
All six stations will be staffed during the following hours:
Sept. 18 – Oct. 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Oct. 28 – Nov. 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Nov. 20 – Jan. 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The six DNR operated stations are at Heck’s Farm Market, 7266 STH 14, Arena; Eagle Mart Stop-N-Go, 8029 STH 18/151, Barneveld; Norslein’s Wood Works, 4738 STH 78, Black Earth; Countryside Lanes, 1255 CTH F, Hollandale; STH 80 Boat Landing on the Wisconsin River, Muscoda; and the Lone Rock Unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, one mile west of Lone Rock on STH 14.
In addition to the DNR stations, Palan’s Outpost Sport Shop, STH 80 & CTH BH, south of Highland, will be registering deer from the DEZ and HRZ and collecting deer heads for CWD testing under a cooperative agreement with DNR.
