Utah : Elk and Deer Samples Needed

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is testing for Chronic Wasting Disease (or CWD) again this year. The Northeastern Region is looking closely at hunt units 8 and 9. These are the North and South Slope Units so they would include Diamond Mountain, Flaming Gorge, the eastern and central portions of the Uinta Mountains, and the valley floors on both sides of Highway 40.
The DWR needs samples from both elk and deer from these two units. Hunters should plan to take their deer to a checking station during the opening weekend of the general deer hunt. These stations will be set up along Hwy 40 near the Strawberry Reservoir, on the west side of Wolf Creek Pass, at junction of Highway 191 and the Red Cloud Loop, and along Brush Creek for those coming off Diamond Mountain.
Biologists and conservation officers may also take elk and deer samples as they work the hunts. For those who miss an opportunity to donate a sample in the field, their elk or deer can be taken to any Division office or the Flaming Gorge Fisheries Station during normal work hours. The Northeastern Regional Office is located at 152 E. 100 S. in Vernal. Other offices include Salt Lake City, Price, Springville, Cedar City and Ogden. |
