Game Management Units, Wildlife Management Zones and Counties where CWD has been Detected in Wild Populations
The number one objective in the management of CWD is to prevent its spread into new areas. One theoretical
mode of disease transmission is via infected carcasses. Therefore, in an effort to minimize the risk of
disease spread, a number of states have adopted regulations affecting the transportation of hunter-harvested deer and elk.
Some states have restricted the importation of whole deer and elk carcasses from areas where CWD has been
detected in the wild. The following information is provided to advise hunters which areas may be subject
to Carcass Transportation Regulations.
The following game management units (GMU's), equivalent wildlife management units, or counties have
had wild deer or elk diagnosed with CWD. Click on state name to view a CWD distribution map for that state
(NOTE: maps not available for all states). A U.S. map of CWD distribution in wild deer and elk is
provided at the bottom of this page.
