The Department has established a Mandatory Sampling Area for Chronic Wasting Disease in southwestern Frederick County. This area is west of Route 600, north of Paddy’s Cove Lane and Vance’s Cove Lane, and south of Fall Run Lane and Heishman Lane (see map). Mandatory sampling of hunter-harvested deer will take place on the following dates:
- November 1, 2008 (opening of muzzleloader season)
- November 15, 2008 (opening of general firearms season)
- November 17, 2008
- January 3, 2009 (last day of deer season)
If a hunter harvests a deer within the Mandatory Sampling Area on the dates listed above, he/she MUST bring the deer to Gore Grocery or Graden’s Supermarket check stations, or T & R Deer Processing in order to submit it for sampling. A hunter may still check his/her deer in by phone (telecheck system), but still MUST bring the deer to one of these Department-staffed sampling stations. If you harvest a deer you wish to have mounted, bring it to one of the sampling stations. We will gather the information we need from you and then direct you to a cooperating taxidermist(s) in the area where we may obtain a sample after they have caped your animal. If a hunter harvests a deer outside of the Mandatory Sampling Area but within the Active Surveillance Area on the dates listed above, he/she may also voluntarily bring the deer to be sampled at the same sampling stations.
