Waukesha – Archery deer hunters are setting a strong pace with the number of deer harvested in the chronic wasting disease areas in southeastern Wisconsin. Since the bow season opened on September 18, more than 350 deer heads have been collected in the disease eradication and herd reduction zones here.

“We greatly appreciate the hunter cooperation in harvesting deer and providing samples for CWD testing,” said wildlife area supervisor Tami Ryan. “We are counting on the continued help from bow hunters, along with gun deer hunters, over the next couple of months.”

Collection of deer heads is mandatory for all deer harvested in the CWD disease eradication zone (DEZ) in Walworth and Rock counties and in the herd reduction zone in Walworth, Waukesha, Racine and Kenosha counties.

In Walworth and Rock counties, the DEZ includes roughly the southeast quarter of Rock County and the southwest portion of Walworth County. Ryan reminds hunters that all deer harvested in the DEZ must be registered within the DEZ no later than 5:00 p.m. the day after it was killed. In the DEZ the bow season runs through January 3 and the gun season is October 28 through January 3.

Hunters can take their deer to Big Foot Beach State Park for registration and head collection. Located at 1452 S. Wells Street in Lake Geneva, the registration station is open daily through January 4. Following is a list of hours of operation at Big Foot Beach State Park and other registrations stations serving hunters in the DEZ.
