MADISON — Zone-T Deer Hunting Season is in full swing in many parts of Wisconsin. Miserable hunting conditions on Friday, the second day of the season, gave way to almost ideal hunting conditions in south and central Wisconsin on Saturday.

Hunter report hearing many shots taken in the field, and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Collection Centers within the CWD Eradication Zone were busy Saturday morning.

Hunters showing up at some CWD sample collection centers, particularly in northern Wisconsin on Thursday and Friday, mistakenly believed they had to pay to submit samples to the Department of Natural Resources’ deer disease surveillance effort.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Fred Strand, DNR Wildlife Management Area Supervisor in Superior. “We are asking hunters to bring in their deer. We will remove the deer head, and the hunter can take the meat home. We will test tissue from the head for CWD. There is NO COST to the hunter. We just need hunters to bring their deer to us so we can collect samples,” he said.

Participants in the surveillance study will learn test results of their individual deer and county-wide testing results will be posted on the DNR Web site.

DNR is committed to sampling about 50,000 deer from around the state — 500 per county — this fall as part of its CWD surveillance program. The ambitious testing program is designed to tell biologists with confidence whether or not the disease exists in a county. Most sampling, outside of the Intensive Harvest Zone, is taking place during the Oct. 24-27 Zone T hunt and the opening weekend (Nov. 23-24) of the nine-day gun season.

Within the CWD Intensive Harvest Zone, all deer will be sampled. Hunters taking deer in the CWD Management Zone are urged to take their deer to one of the CWD sample collection sites located in that zone (See sites for South Central Region in the table below).

“Hunters from that area are taking deer and registering them, which is fine, but then they need to bring their deer to one of the collection sites so we can get the data we need to manage the CWD problem,” said Greg Matthews, DNR South Central Region public affairs manager.

Each county in the CWD Management Zone has eight to nine registration stations but only two to three CWD sample collection stations, he said. Hunters may register deer at either the registration stations or the CWD sample collection stations, but samples will only be taken at those CWD collection stations.

Hunters wishing to participate in the CWD and deer disease surveillance program should bring their deer to one of the CWD collection sites:
